Upper Eyelid SurgeryUpper Eyelid Surgery

Redundant skin is an aging change that drives many to seek upper eyelid surgery for a more aesthetic appearance. In saying this there are instances where genetical factors come into play – there are cases where younger individuals, those having more skin laxity, appear tired and older looking.

Excessive upper eyelid skin and surplus fat can be easily remedied through a surgical procedure called upper blepharoplasty. Puffiness and bags on the other hand, are removed during a lower blepharoplasty procedure.

This article attempts to lay out the myths and facts surrounding upper eyelid surgery, thus enabling readers to seek the appropriate treatment when considering eyelid surgery.

Myth 1Upper eyelid surgery removes “crow’s feet”. Fact 1Untrue.

“Crow’s feet” are lines that form at the outside corner of the eyes. They come about as a result of repeated movement of the muscles surrounding the eyes and upper cheeks. Over time this repeated action intensifies into permanent lines. The upper blepharoplasty procedure removes excess skin and fats – resulting in tighten and firmed skin around the eyelids. Here, botox would be the better alternative to remove “Crow’s feet”.

Myth 2Upper eyelid surgery is a permanent procedure. Fact 2It is difficult to conclude simply because aging is a naturally occurring process. Whilst there is no guarantee to re-occurrence of “sagging” eyelids, the upper blepharoplasty technique is highly seen as a procedure that helps to prolong an individual’s youthful appearance.
Myth 3Upper eyelid surgery removes “hooding” of the upper eyelid and improve eyebrow positioning. Fact 3Untrue.

Upper eyelid surgery results in skin tightening. Over time eye brow tend to sag. In this instance an eyebrow lift is more appropriate.

Myth 4Upper eyelid surgery is only for the elderly. Fact 4Untrue.

Redundant skin is generally seen as a sign of aging but to some, it could be caused by genetics. In some instances, people have so much skin over the upper eyelids that they have difficulty seeing. Upper blepharoplasty surgery can remove this problem for patients of any age.

Myth 5Upper eyelid surgery gives a “startled” appearance. Fact 5The advancement in plastic surgery techniques has paved the way for a more natural appearance. Nowadays, patients are educated - sourcing information and discussing with their surgeons the expectations and limitations of a given surgical procedure.
Myth 6Upper eyelid surgery is for women only. Fact 6Untrue.

In today’s metrosexual male society, men of different cultures and occupational backgrounds have undergone eyelid surgery. Upper eyelid surgery for men results in a more healthy, fresh and masculine appearance.
