Exquisite Eyes thru Eyelid Surgery

Exquisite Eyes thru Eyelid surgery

The Essence of Visual Beauty

Asians, especially those in East Asia are more inclined to have a single eyelid configuration. In Korea and Japan for example, an estimated 80% of adults are predisposed to a single-eyelid configuration, whereas for the Chinese population, it estimated to be around 50%.

Thankfully with current cosmetic advancements, combined with the growing affluence of Asian societies, the inauspicious looking eye can now be fixed.

The double eyelid surgery is touted as the most popular aesthetic surgery in Asia; it is a procedure to make the eyes look bigger and rounder. Individuals with double eyelids are perceived as having beautiful eyes as compared to those with single eyelids.

For many Asians, eyelid surgery is an investment; one that can maximize the chances of success in work and marriage. The younger generations of Koreans – in particular females are more predisposed to eyelid surgery than any other country because aesthetic beauty is greatly equated to success.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty refers to the creation of a visible fold to the eyelid (also called a crease) where one in not already visible. It is a procedure to widen the eye or lift the eyelid. The double-lid appearance can be created via 3 main surgical techniques: the suture, the partial-incision and the full-incision. The aim of all three techniques is to give more prominence to the upper eyelid without making the eye appear unnatural.

Four types of eyelid surgery

We can subdivide cosmetic eyelid surgery into 4 different types:

  1. Blepharoplasty – the removal of surplus fats in the upper/lower eyelids
  2. Double eye-lid fold surgery – the construction of a double eyelid fold
  3. Ptosis surgery – treatment for drooping eyelids (also called lazy eyes)
  4. Epicanthoplasty or lateral canthoplasty – to sharpen/lengthen the edge of inner and outer eyelids

All the above involve different techniques. Therefore it is important to discuss and understand the particular technique that your surgeon recommends.

It is normal for a surgeon to recommend a particular technique since it depends on factors such as the condition of your muscles around the eyes, the amount of excess fat and skin in the eye area, the positioning of your eyebrows and eyes, etc. Ultimately the aim of an eyelid surgery is to have one that appears natural.

Where to go for eyelid surgery?

Korean plastic surgery clinics are renowned for eyelid surgical procedures that are most suited to the Asian demographic group. Plastic surgery statistics show that over 80,000 visitors travel to Korea for cosmetic surgery, making Korea a leading destination for cosmetic surgery tourism.

In Seoul alone, there are 650 registered websites for plastic surgery clinics. Out of this number, it is estimated that only 12% are translated to other languages.

It is advised that for those wanting cosmetic surgery, research is important. Check out hospitals and clinics for their licenses and find out the credibility of surgeons. Choosing the right surgeon the first time round is vital because sometimes appearance is not so easily reversed.
