The Beauty of Asian Double Eyelid Surgery

Written by Chelsea Kim. Posted in Korean Eyelid Surgery

Asian Double Eyelid Surgery

Beautiful Eyes with Asian Double Eyelid Surgery

We are all aware that Asians and Caucasians differ anatomically, physically, psychologically and culturally. Expectations and the perception of beauty are also managed differently in Asia. For this reason, cosmetic surgical approach in Asia will differ from a western stance.

Asian Double Eyelid Surgery

Asian double eyelid surgery is a recent development targeted to individuals of Asian lineage; it is a surgical procedure that is uniquely Asian, hence the term ‘Asian double eyelid surgery’.

The aim of the Asian double eyelid surgery is to create a fold in poorly defined or asymmetrical eyelids. In most cases, there will be minimal or no fat removal at all.

It is not to be confused with blepharoplasty: this is a technique developed much earlier and the operation involves the removal of excessive, stretched, redundant or poorly positioned skin and fat.

Would Asian double eyelid surgery result in patients with a Westernized look?

The answer is no. The misconception with Asian double eyelid surgery is that patients want a Caucasian or Westernized result. The truth is, Caucasian eyes would look out of place and mismatched on an Asian face, simply because of the general anatomical difference between Caucasians and Asians.

The goal in having an Asian double eyelid surgery is to beautify the eyes either through the creation of a double fold, removal of epicanthic folds (skin folds of the upper eyelid covering inner corner of the eye) and/or having a bigger eye opening.

Why South Korea above other Asian medical destinations?

On the whole, Asia is frontal in the development of latest medical advancements in cosmetic surgery. Nevertheless South Korea has taken a step further: they have made cosmetic surgery a component in their tourism canvass. Many travel to Korea for plastic surgery.

Not only have they gained respect as the destination for renowned cosmetic surgery, other factors such as patient after care service, world class facilities, ease of travel passage, government stability, modern infrastructure, operational costs, favorable exchange rates are reasons many have preferred South Korea above others.

The epitome of Korean pop culture/drama and societal acceptance has also helped to increase awareness in cosmetic enhancement and driven the boom in the cosmetic surgery industry.

Exquisite Eyes thru Eyelid Surgery

Exquisite Eyes thru Eyelid surgery

The Essence of Visual Beauty

Asians, especially those in East Asia are more inclined to have a single eyelid configuration. In Korea and Japan for example, an estimated 80% of adults are predisposed to a single-eyelid configuration, whereas for the Chinese population, it estimated to be around 50%.

Thankfully with current cosmetic advancements, combined with the growing affluence of Asian societies, the inauspicious looking eye can now be fixed.

The double eyelid surgery is touted as the most popular aesthetic surgery in Asia; it is a procedure to make the eyes look bigger and rounder. Individuals with double eyelids are perceived as having beautiful eyes as compared to those with single eyelids.

For many Asians, eyelid surgery is an investment; one that can maximize the chances of success in work and marriage. The younger generations of Koreans – in particular females are more predisposed to eyelid surgery than any other country because aesthetic beauty is greatly equated to success.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty refers to the creation of a visible fold to the eyelid (also called a crease) where one in not already visible. It is a procedure to widen the eye or lift the eyelid. The double-lid appearance can be created via 3 main surgical techniques: the suture, the partial-incision and the full-incision. The aim of all three techniques is to give more prominence to the upper eyelid without making the eye appear unnatural.

Four types of eyelid surgery

We can subdivide cosmetic eyelid surgery into 4 different types:

  1. Blepharoplasty – the removal of surplus fats in the upper/lower eyelids
  2. Double eye-lid fold surgery – the construction of a double eyelid fold
  3. Ptosis surgery – treatment for drooping eyelids (also called lazy eyes)
  4. Epicanthoplasty or lateral canthoplasty – to sharpen/lengthen the edge of inner and outer eyelids

All the above involve different techniques. Therefore it is important to discuss and understand the particular technique that your surgeon recommends.

It is normal for a surgeon to recommend a particular technique since it depends on factors such as the condition of your muscles around the eyes, the amount of excess fat and skin in the eye area, the positioning of your eyebrows and eyes, etc. Ultimately the aim of an eyelid surgery is to have one that appears natural.

Where to go for eyelid surgery?

Korean plastic surgery clinics are renowned for eyelid surgical procedures that are most suited to the Asian demographic group. Plastic surgery statistics show that over 80,000 visitors travel to Korea for cosmetic surgery, making Korea a leading destination for cosmetic surgery tourism.

In Seoul alone, there are 650 registered websites for plastic surgery clinics. Out of this number, it is estimated that only 12% are translated to other languages.

It is advised that for those wanting cosmetic surgery, research is important. Check out hospitals and clinics for their licenses and find out the credibility of surgeons. Choosing the right surgeon the first time round is vital because sometimes appearance is not so easily reversed.

Things to be Aware of Before and After Eyelid Surgery

Written by Chelsea Kim. Posted in Korean Eyelid Surgery

Things to be Aware of Before and After Eyelid Surgery

A number of Asian countries are par with western countries in terms of industrialization, and dominance in the fields of technology and entertainment. This has brought about a transformation in how Asians perceive westerners, and vice versa. On the other hand, Asians are now more exposed to the western culture, which has changed their aesthetic sense of what beauty means. The identification of Asians to westerners, particularly in the field of entertainment, has increased the demand for cosmetic procedures in Asia. They now accept and highly regard the western beauty standards.

Because Asian eyes are very distinctive, due to inherent factors, eyelid surgeries such as blepharoplasty, epicanthoplasty, and lateral canthoplasty, and double eyelid fold surgery, have become very popular procedures for people of Asian descent. As its popularity surges, more Asian men and women are contemplating undergoing eye cosmetic surgery. Just like other cosmetic procedures, preparations before and after eyelid surgery and following doctor’s instructions are as important as the surgery itself!

What should I do when I have decided to undergo eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery can really make a difference in your own self perception and how others see you. If you have decided to undergo eyelid surgery, it would be best for you to consult your friends who have undergone this procedure, visit internet forums, and make your own research before you decide where and who is going to perform the procedure. Your first consultation is very crucial, and pre-operative preparations must be discussed before going further.

Your doctor can alleviate your hesitations and fears, by explaining the entire procedure to you.  You must be in tip top condition, even if it is a simple procedure. If you are taking any form of medication, disclose this too. Although the surgery is very simple and almost risk free, there are still certain things you must follow to avoid unnecessary complications.

What should I expect after the eyelid surgery?

If you have discussed everything with your doctor before the procedure, then you know that you will experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the areas surrounding the eyes.  This is very normal, and should not make you feel discouraged or disappointed. Be sure to follow doctor’s orders, and take your medications religiously.

Depending on the procedure you have undergone, change will not be visible in the days or the weeks to follow. A realistic expectation on this matter will help you ease your fears and remain optimistic. Just like any other cosmetic procedures, the change will come slowly, but when it does, you will realize there was nothing to be afraid of, and that your eyelid surgery is worth the discomfort and the cost.

The Importance of Ptosis Eye Correction Surgery to Asians

Written by Chelsea Kim. Posted in Korean Eyelid Surgery

The Importance of Ptosis Eye Correction Surgery to AsiansAsian eyes are quite unique compared to those of Caucasian and other ethnic groups. Factors such as inherited genes and the needs of primeval Asians to survive extreme weather conditions are the basic reasons why Asian eyes look narrower and slanted. With the emergence of the highly specialized eye cosmetic procedures, and the advancement of medical science and doctors who specialize in these procedures, eye cosmetic procedures have gained popularity for aesthetic purposes, particularly for people of Asian descent.

These cosmetic eyelid surgery procedures are meant to improve one’s look, but they are also done for people who suffer from the implications of having narrower eyes, such as blurred vision or those who suffer from limited peripheral vision. Asians also have other eye problems that can be easily corrected surgically, like ptosis.

What is Ptosis?

Ptosis is a very common condition in Asians. There are thousands of people suffering from this condition who are of Asian descent, but no one really uses ptosis to describe this condition. It is common for people to describe ptosis as drooping or sagging eyelids. Ptosis can be inborn, or may develop later in life when the muscles found on the upper eyelid. It occurs when the levator palpebris muscle does not function properly, and manifests through the significant drooping or sagging of the upper eyelids. It can also be caused by certain medical conditions which can affect the eyelids and eye muscles.

People who suffer from this condition have to contend with eyes that look misshapen or asymmetrical. This can cause low self-esteem, an inferiority complex, and can affect one’s ability to form relationships. Unlike other eye problems that are not that noticeable, ptosis is so obvious and evident that there is no other recourse for people who are suffering from it but to seek medical help. Fortunately, ptosis eye correction surgery is readily available, safe, and affordable.

Is Ptosis Eye Correction Surgery the Answer?

Ptosis is no longer a condition that you have to live with for the rest of your life. An appointment with a certified medical expert to discuss your condition will allay your fears and encourage you to undertake this cosmetic procedure. If you are serious about getting rid of this problem once and for all, then yes, ptosis eye correction surgery is the answer.

The procedure is quite simple, and a hospital stay is not needed. The method used for ptosis correction has some similarities with double eyelid surgery, where a full incision is done to lift up the eyelids and remove extra skin, fat tissues, and muscles that aggravate this condition. Two weeks after the procedure, a significant change is evident, and before you know it, your eyes look much better than how they used to be. Thousands of men and women have undergone this procedure and have no regrets. It has given them a new lease on life, an opportunity to enjoy clearer vision, and an invigorated look.

Reshaping the Unique Asian Feature Through Double Eyelid Surgery

Written by Chelsea Kim. Posted in Korean Eyelid Surgery

Double Eyelid Surgery: Reshaping the Unique Asian Feature

Eyelids: that little skin on top of our eyes I never really paid attention to until we all got hooked with the Korean craze. The majority of Korean celebrities who are popular today have had a number of surgeries to enhance their look, and cosmetic eyelid surgery might just top their list. Who knew it was an important feature to looking beautiful, to more than 50% of most Asians who have single eyelids? Many may have taken it for granted, but to most Asians, the idea of double eyelids—or a distinct fold or crease on their lids—matters a lot.

A friend of mine who has mono-lids constantly rants on her struggle to put on eyeliner. She makes comments like, “Eyeliners would do no good on my single eyelids. No matter how thick I apply, the moment I open my eyes, everything seems to disappear.” This makes it even harder for her, since she is such a huge fan of makeup, particularly eyeliners and eyeshades. She further says that this can be a huge factor in the beauty department. My friend speaks for the million other Asians who value the importance of double eyelid surgery. It comes as no surprise that eyelid surgery comes third in the leading cosmetic surgeries done in Asia, shortly surpassing breast augmentation and liposuction.

Why do Asians get Double Eyelid Fold Surgery?

Most Caucasians think that the reason why Asians get double eyelid surgery or Asian eyelid surgery is to achieve a more Western look, making Asians one of them. Unfortunately, when the majority, if not all, of those who have done it are asked, they reveal that they do it for the sake of beauty, not just to blend in to the Western community. Many of them got tired of applying double lid glue or tape, so they opted for cosmetic surgeries that leave them with a permanent, natural-looking crease configuration on their lids. This will leave them with larger looking eyes and make makeup sessions a lot easier.

What Takes Place During a Double Eyelid Fold Surgery Procedure?

For Asians, there are different methods in achieving the upper eyelid crease. To those who have excess skin on the upper eyelid, they can always go for the classic technique of removing the excess skin and fat, with the resulting incision as the new crease. The new crease will blend in perfectly, leaving you with a very natural look. To the younger patients who don’t have extra skin, the suture technique can be a better option. Three to four absorbable sutures will be placed in the upper eyelid to produce a crease.

Why Choose Asian Surgeons to Do Asian Eyelid Fold Surgery?

Since single eyelids are a very unique Asian feature, Asian surgeons are in the best position to do the procedure. Either they have the best understanding on it because they actually have it, or they have the widest knowledge on it since they have already done it to a million other Asian patients. Although cosmetic eyelid surgery can sound like a very modest procedure, wouldn’t you like to trust your lids on the pro?
