A Personal Note on Cosmetic Nose Surgery

Way back when I was younger, my mother had this weird practice of pinching my nose while uttering the words “tubo, tubo, tubo,” which actually meant “grow, grow, grow.” I kept asking her why she had to keep doing it to me every morning. Her simple reply: “It is for you to look beautiful,” was convincing enough that I allowed her to constantly do it on me, sometimes even reminding her to do so.

As I grew up, I started to realize the exact rationale behind my mom’s peculiar drill, and why it had to be done on my nose amongst all other body parts. Being an Asian, a flat nose scenario is very common. Way back in the olden times, Asian mothers had to pinch their children’s nose either to prevent them from having flat noses or to physically tweak them if it was not as pointy. It only goes to show that through the years, noses can play a huge part in looking beautiful. So when one is not as blessed to have a highly defined nose, this can raise a concern to one’s total beauty. Universal aesthetic standards would reveal that an ideal nose is one that is proportional to his face and one that is a bit pointier. This, however, is not present in most Asians.

I remember my mom describing that her make-up rituals often included line techniques on her nose, to help define it and guise it to looking sharper and straighter. Unfortunately, the hitch of such methods was that as soon as sweat dripped on her face, her make-up lines slid down as well. This only left her looking hideous. What used to be a make-up trick is now magic all gone wrong.

When I was growing up, I had a cousin who was often teased because of her flared or wide nostrils. Little did we know,  this would affect both her personality and the way she related to others. As teens, I would often find her hiding her face with a handkerchief, or staying home instead of joining us at parties. They moved out of town, and it was only a few years ago that we saw each other again. I was surprised by the change in her personality and looks. She looked stunning and different, and she became very outgoing! I found out later that she underwent alar base reduction surgery, which is also known as nostril reduction. I never thought that a simple surgery would change her outlook in life, and her physical appearance.

Her change was awe inspiring, and she told me that this type of nose surgery is actually very common among Asians. A lot of Asians have thicker and wider alae base, which can be very obvious when they smile or laugh. This will make the nostrils larger than usual, and the sides so thick that some people suffering from flared nostrils say it feels like they have a small tomato or onion on top of their noses!
