What is the Korean Double Eyelid Surgery?

Written by Chelsea Kim. Posted in Eye Lid Surgery, Korean Eyelid Surgery, Korean Plastic Surgery

korean double eyelidNumerous individuals are willing to submit themselves to eye lift surgery and double eyelid surgery, the most popular Korean plastic surgery, so their eyes look more defined. The main difference between Eastern and Western eyes is that Eastern eyes lack the crease, which is otherwise known as the double eyelid. The effect of the Korean double eyelid surgery is a wider, more awake-looking set of eyes. In older patients, wrinkles are removed. Simply put, a crease is formed where there was lack of a double eyelid, which adds more depth to the eye.

What Happens During the Surgery?

During the procedure, the doctor makes tiny cuts through the eyelid’s natural fold. In some cases, the doctor cuts below the lower lashes on the bottom lid. Once the small incisions are made, the surgeon removes the excess fatty tissue and loose skin. After the surgery, the patient can go home if there were no complications. After 7 days, the patient needs to return to the clinic to have the stitches removed. Both eyes can be done on the same day, or they can be done separately; it’s up to the patient to decide.

Are There Side Effects and Risks Involved? If So, What are They?

Every surgery and cosmetic procedure, despite how simple or minimally invasive, has risks and side effects. Swelling and bruising around the eyes is one of the side effects that patients will experience after surgery. The swelling and bruising will improve in a few weeks. Another side effect is blurry vision and sensitivity to light, but these improve within a month. After surgery, closing the eyelids becomes a tad troublesome, yet it will improve in a week or two.

Complications of this procedure are rare yet serious. Losing your vision is very rare, but it is still a possibility. Another complication of undergoing this surgery, although rare, is severe scarring at the operating site. The best way to minimize risks and complications is to visit a board certified Korean plastic surgeon.

How Long is the Recovery Time?

Recovering from this surgery is fairly quick. It takes about a week to have the stiches removed from the patient’s eyelids. After the stiches are removed, the eyes will feel tender and swollen for a few weeks. Patients are advised to avoid contact sports and physical activity for two months after the surgery. However, these are only general guidelines because each patient recovers at his or her own pace.
